1. Begin on a Wednesday morning, after a bath.
2. Wash the bead in clean water, then in a little raw milk, and dry it on a clean cloth.
3. Hold it and set your intention for the study, performance or piece of work you want to see through.
4. Chant Om Hreem Hum Namah eleven times, then put it on.
5. Being uncapped, thread it on red or white cotton yourself, or place it in your puja space and touch it before you start work each day.
6. Handle it dry, and rub in a little mustard or olive oil once a year if you wear it daily.

Uncapped beads are usually worn on knotted red cotton rather than a chain, which keeps the trunk formation and all six mukhis visible. If you would rather wear it as a pendant, a jeweller can cap it in silver without altering the bead itself.

Wednesday is Ganesha's day across most of North India, and since this bead is listed under him as well as Kartikeya, that is the customary start. The Chaturthi tithi, and Ganesh Chaturthi above all, are the other traditional choices. If you prefer to follow the graha, Venus rules the six-faced bead and a Friday works equally well.

Beads that grow a natural trunk-like outgrowth are called Ganesh Rudraksha in the trade, and when that outgrowth appears on a six-faced Nepali bead the result is counted as Kartikeya's mukhi and Ganapati's form at once. The growth is a quirk of how the shell hardens around the seed; it cannot be carved on without leaving tool marks along the base. Collectors keep such beads uncapped precisely so the formation stays visible, which is why this one is sold loose rather than as a finished pendant.
