Real, verified reviews from our spiritual community
- Crystal glass cover with lid — the chimney shields the flame from draught, which is what makes an unbroken akhand jyot practical indoors
- 100 mm body — deep enough to hold ghee or oil for a long burn without a top-up every couple of hours
- The cover contains the soot — carbon settles on the inside of the glass rather than on the mandir wall and ceiling
- Solid brass base — heavy and wide, so a lamp that must stand for days is not tipped by a passing sleeve
- Glass lifts off for lighting and cleaning, and the lid controls draught at the top
- Home mandir, in the north-east or east of the puja room, on the altar shelf
- Facing east or north, set to the right of the deity if you follow the traditional arrangement
- On a stone, metal or ceramic plate — a lamp burning for days transfers real heat into whatever it stands on
- Well away from curtains, garlands, paper calendars and cloth backdrops, and out of reach of children and pets
- Not on a shelf with anything stacked above it, and not where a fan or open window blows across the top
- 1. Wash the brass body in warm water with tamarind or lemon and salt before first use; wash the glass separately in plain soapy water and dry both completely
- 2. Fill the well with ghee for a traditional akhand jyot, or with gingelly (sesame) oil where a very long burn makes ghee impractical
- 3. Use one thick twisted cotton wick, or a ready-made akhand wick, set so a short tip clears the oil; a single wick is usual for akhand burning
- 4. Light it at the start of Navratri, Diwali or the puja period, from a match or another lamp, then lower the glass cover into place
- 5. Chant the mantra of your household deity while lighting, or Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseed Praseed for a Lakshmi akhand jyot
- 6. Top up the ghee every few hours without letting the flame die, and wash the glass between uses — soot on the inside of the chimney dims the light within a day or two and needs washing rather than wiping
An akhand jyot is a lamp kept alight without interruption for the length of a vow — the nine nights of Navratri, a Ramayana path, or in some temples a full year. The unbroken flame stands for continuity of attention: the household undertakes not to let it die, and so someone must check it through the night. A glass chimney is a practical addition to an old practice, since the standing difficulty with an akhand jyot has always been keeping it lit against draught without letting soot blacken the shrine.
