- The compact 2.4 inch Annapurna — At 92 grams she fits on a narrow kitchen ledge, a spice shelf or a small pooja niche where the 3 inch murti would not.
- The goddess who feeds — Annapurna carries the ladle and the vessel of rice, and is the deity whose worship is conducted in the kitchen itself.
- Sized for a modern kitchen — Flats with fitted kitchens rarely have a clear shelf, and this height sits above a counter without crowding it.
- A first Annapurna for a new home — Commonly the murti given at a housewarming or a baby shower, where a larger piece would be a mandir purchase.
- Akshaya Tritiya and Annapurna Jayanti — The days on which she is formally worshipped.
- Place her on the east or north wall of the kitchen, facing east or north.
- She may also be kept on a dining room sideboard or in the pooja niche if the kitchen has no clear ledge.
- Keep her at eye level or above the counter on a small clean cloth, and not on the worktop itself where she will be moved every time you cook.
- Do not place her over the hob, next to the sink or the bin, or on the shelf where cleaning materials are stored.
- Cooking vapour darkens small brass faster than anything else in the house. Wipe her weekly with a dry cloth; the darker tone is normal and need not be polished out.
- 1. Rinse the murti in clean water before first placement, dry it fully and set it on a clean cloth on the shelf.
- 2. Light a small ghee diya beside her; a diya rather than a full lamp stand suits the space this size occupies.
- 3. Offer a spoon of the day's first cooked rice before the meal is served, the offering specific to Annapurna.
- 4. Add haldi, kumkum and a white or yellow flower.
- 5. Chant Om Annapurnayai Namah, traditionally 108 times.
- 6. Annapurna Jayanti, on the Margashirsha full moon, and Akshaya Tritiya are the principal days. Finish with the aarti and serve the offered rice as prasad.
Annapurna is Parvati in the aspect of the one who feeds, holding a ladle in one hand and the anna-patra, the vessel of cooked food, in the other. The Kashi Khanda relates that Shiva himself took alms from her at Varanasi, and she is held there to be the sovereign of the city rather than merely its resident goddess. Her worship is domestic and daily rather than temple-centred: the first serving of the day's rice is offered to her before anyone in the house eats.
