• Face the murti north or east, and sit facing east or north during puja.
• The north-east of the puja room is the traditional quarter. On a studio or office shelf, use the north or east side of the room.
• Give the dancing figure room to be seen from the side; a shallow shelf or an open niche suits it better than a crowded almirah.
• Keep it out of the bedroom, off the bathroom wall, and away from the underside of a staircase and any footwear.
• A dancing figure has a narrow contact point with its base. Set it where it cannot be knocked, and check that the base sits flat before leaving it on a high shelf.

1. 1. Wash the murti in clean water and then panchamrit before first placement, rinse it and dry it fully.
2. 2. Place it on a red cloth and light a ghee lamp and a stick of incense to its right.
3. 3. Offer durva grass in bunches of three blades, red hibiscus, and sindoor if you follow that practice.
4. 4. Chant Om Gam Ganapataye Namah, traditionally 108 times.
5. 5. Wednesday is Ganesha's day; Ganesh Chaturthi is the principal festival and the traditional day to install a new murti.
6. 6. Offer modak or laddoo, perform the aarti and distribute the prasad.

Natya Ganapati is one of the thirty-two forms of Ganesha enumerated in the Mudgala Purana, and it belongs to the same sculptural tradition that produced the dancing Shiva. The pose, with one leg lifted and the body turned at the hip, is a device Indian bronze casters used to convey rhythm in a static object. Because Ganesha is honoured before any performance or undertaking begins, the dancing form has long been kept by those working in music, dance and the other arts.
