5. 5. Chant Om Hanumate Namah one hundred and eight times, ringing the bell at the start and again at the close of the recitation
6. 6. Ring it before each aarti and again at the end; dry it whenever ritual water or milk touches it, and expect the brass to darken — many households polish the bell only before Hanuman Jayanti and leave the patina the rest of the year

The bell is rung at the opening of worship because its sound is treated as a form of nada, the primordial vibration, and as a signal that ordinary conversation in the room should stop. Temple practice holds that the ringing should continue while light is being shown to the deity, which is why aarti and the ghanti go together. Hanuman on the handle is a departure from the usual Nandi or Garuda finial, and marks the bell as belonging to a household that keeps Tuesday and Saturday as its principal days of worship.
