Customer Reviews
Real, verified reviews from our spiritual community
- Integrated ash tray — the channel beneath the stick catches falling ash instead of letting it drift onto the altar cloth
- Holds sticks upright at a slight angle — the standard incense position, so the ember burns evenly down the length
- Takes both agarbatti and thicker dhoop sticks — the hole is sized for standard bamboo-core incense
- 58 g of solid brass — light to handle, but weighted low enough that a burning stick will not tip it
- Small footprint — fits on a crowded mandir shelf, a desk corner or a meditation table without taking a full shelf position
- Home mandir, meditation corner or study — placed to the side of the deity rather than directly in front of it
- North-east or east of the puja room, at shelf or table height
- On a hard surface, not on cloth or paper; embers occasionally drop and the tray itself warms slightly
- Set it where the smoke can rise and drift, not where it collects under a low shelf or against a wall
- Not directly beneath a wall hanging, curtain, calendar or shelf edge that the smoke will stain over time
- 1. Rinse the stand in warm water before first use, dry it, and set it in place
- 2. Light the incense at the tip, let it flame for two or three seconds, then wave it out so an ember remains rather than a flame
- 3. Set the stick in the hole with the burning end over the tray, and offer the smoke by circling it clockwise three times before the deity
- 4. Three sticks is the usual daily count; one is acceptable for a short morning offering
- 5. Chant the mantra of your household deity while offering, or Om Namah Shivaya, which serves as a general offering mantra
- 6. Empty the ash once it has cooled and wipe the tray with a dry cloth; incense resin leaves a sticky film on brass that needs an occasional tamarind or lemon-and-salt clean rather than water alone
Dhoop is one of the five offerings of the panchopachara puja, alongside flower, lamp, food and sandal paste, and it stands for the air element — the offering that fills the room rather than sits on the plate. Incense in India predates the stick form by a long way: resin and wood powder were burnt loose on charcoal, and the bamboo-cored agarbatti is a comparatively recent convenience. A stand with a tray exists for a practical reason rather than a ritual one, which is that ash falling on an altar cloth for years is very difficult to keep clean.
