1. 1. Wash all parts in warm water with tamarind or lemon and salt before first use, dry them fully and reassemble
2. 2. For aarti, place one or two camphor tablets in the bowl, light them and lower the jali cover; camphor burns out in a minute or two, so light it at the point in the aarti where it is needed
3. 3. For a diya, fill the lower well with ghee or gingelly (sesame) oil, set a single twisted cotton wick with the tip over the lip, and light it
4. 4. As a night lamp, use a small quantity of oil and a thin wick, and leave the jali cover in place so the flame is shielded
5. 5. Chant Om Namah Shivaya while circling the camphor flame before the deity, or the mantra of your household deity; camphor is offered at the close of the aarti, after the ghee lamp
6. 6. Let the piece cool, then lift out the bowl and clean it — camphor leaves a hard black residue that needs a soak in hot water with lemon and salt, and the jali holes need a soft brush to stay open

Camphor is burnt at the close of aarti because it leaves nothing behind: it sublimates straight from solid to vapour, and where a ghee wick leaves carbon and an offering of food leaves prasad, the karpura flame consumes itself completely. That total disappearance is read as the model for the ego dissolving in the divine, and the Karpura Gauram verse sung at the end of aarti makes the comparison explicit. Devotees pass their palms over the camphor flame and touch their eyes, taking the last of the light before the shrine is closed.
