1. 1. Before first placement, wash the murti in clean water, then in panchamrit if available, rinse it and dry it fully with a soft cloth.
2. 2. Place it on a clean cloth on the chowki and light a ghee lamp and a stick of incense to its right.
3. 3. Offer tulsi leaves, which are essential to Krishna worship, along with fresh flowers and a little unsalted butter.
4. 4. Chant Om Kleem Krishnaya Namah, traditionally 108 times, using a tulsi mala.
5. 5. Wednesday and Thursday are the days usually kept for Krishna; Janmashtami and Gopashtami are the principal festivals for this form.
6. 6. Offer bhog of makhan-mishri, kheer or fruit, conclude with the aarti and distribute the prasad.

Kamdhenu, also called Surabhi, appears in the Puranas as the cow who rose from the churning of the ocean and who gives what is asked of her. Krishna's own name Govinda means the one who tends cows, and the Bhagavata places his childhood among the herds of Vrindavan, which is why the two are so often modelled together. The pairing is honoured particularly on Gopashtami, the day set aside for cows, and in households that practise go-seva.
