1. 1. Wash the lamp in warm water with tamarind or lemon and salt before first use, rinse thoroughly and dry it completely
2. 2. Install on the first day of Navratri, on Dhanteras, or on a Friday morning, head pointing into the room
3. 3. Fill the well with ghee for an akhand jyot, or with gingelly (sesame) oil where a very long burn makes ghee impractical
4. 4. Use one thick twisted cotton wick or a ready-made akhand wick, set so a short tip clears the oil, and light it from a match or another lamp
5. 5. Chant Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhanadhanyadi Pataye one hundred and eight times at the lighting, and repeat each morning of the vow
6. 6. Top up the oil every few hours without letting the flame die, lift the carbon head off the wick with tongs, and clean the lip once the lamp is cold — a lamp burning for days blackens around the wick and needs a tamarind or lemon-and-salt scrub afterwards

An akhand jyot is a lamp kept alight without a break for the duration of a vow, most often the nine nights of Navratri, and the discipline lies in the watching as much as in the lighting. The tortoise beneath it is the Vastu emblem of a base that does not shift, drawn from Kurma, the avatar in which Vishnu bore the churning mountain on his back. Putting the two together makes a single object out of two ideas about steadiness: a flame that is not allowed to fail, resting on a creature that does not move.
