1. 1. Before first use, scrub the cups with warm water and a paste of tamarind or lemon and salt, rinse thoroughly and dry
2. 2. Fill each cup about two-thirds with ghee, or with gingelly (sesame) oil for daily use, and set one twisted cotton wick in each
3. 3. Light the wicks from a single flame or a match, never by blowing on an ember, and hold the handle with the tray level
4. 4. Circle the lamp clockwise before the deity, three or seven times at the face and once around the whole form, while the bell is rung
5. 5. Chant the aarti of your household deity, or Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseed Praseed for a Lakshmi aarti
6. 6. Let the wicks burn out, then clean the cups once cool; carbon builds up quickly with multiple wicks and hardens if left, so a tamarind or lemon-and-salt scrub every few uses is worth the effort

Aarti takes its name from aratrika, the ritual of waving light before an image, and the circling movement is the whole point of the lamp: the flame is passed over the deity's form so that every part of it is seen and honoured in turn. Multiple wicks, usually five, stand for the pancha bhuta, the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and space, offered back to the divine. Devotees then cup their hands over the flame and touch their eyes, taking a share of the light that has just touched the image.
