• On a desk or counter she will pick up dust and finger marks faster than a mandir idol. Wipe her with a dry cloth; brass darkens over time and many owners leave it that way.

3. 3. Offer kumkum, haldi, unbroken rice and red or pink flowers, or lotus if you can get it.
4. 4. Chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namah, traditionally 108 times, on a Friday evening after bathing.
5. 5. Friday is Lakshmi's day. Dhanteras, Diwali and Varalakshmi Vratam are the principal occasions of the year.

Lakshmi is the deity of shri, a word that takes in prosperity, beauty and good fortune at once, and she is shown seated on an open lotus to indicate that abundance rests on something that grows rather than on something built. The coins falling from her lower right hand are a later addition to the iconography, common in Indian brass work from the nineteenth century onward. Her worship is fixed to Friday through the week and to Dhanteras and Diwali through the year, when shops and account books are traditionally brought before her.
