- The 3 inch mandir Lakshmi — At 144 grams she has the presence to sit as the central figure of a home shrine rather than beside one.
- Abhaya and varada mudras — The raised palm of reassurance and the lowered palm of giving, the two gestures that define the Mahalakshmi form.
- Half again the mass of the 2.4 inch murti — More metal means deeper relief in the crown, the lotus and the drape of the sari.
- Kept for household Lakshmi Puja — This is the size a family installs and keeps, rather than a desk or dashboard piece.
- Diwali and Akshaya Tritiya — The two occasions on which a household most often adds or replaces a Lakshmi murti.
- Face her east or north; the devotee sits facing east or north while offering puja.
- The north-east of the home is the traditional quarter for the mandir. In a shop or office, use the north wall, which is Kubera's direction.
- Set her on a wooden or marble chowki with a red or pink cloth, at seated chest height or above.
- Do not place her facing south, in a bedroom, against a bathroom wall, or below a staircase. Idols in a mandir stand side by side on one level rather than stacked on tiers.
- Brass darkens as it takes lamp smoke and kumkum. Wipe her dry after puja and polish with lemon and salt only if you want the bright finish back.
- 1. Bathe the murti in clean water and then panchamrit before installation, rinse it and dry it completely.
- 2. Place her on a red cloth with a kalash of water and a coconut beside her if you are performing a full pratishtha.
- 3. Offer lotus or red flowers, kumkum, haldi, unbroken rice and a length of red thread.
- 4. Chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namah, traditionally 108 times, followed by the Shri Suktam or the Kanakadhara Stotram if that is your practice.
- 5. Friday evening is the weekly observance; Dhanteras, Lakshmi Puja on Diwali and Akshaya Tritiya are the principal days of the year.
- 6. Offer kheer, batasha or seasonal fruit, perform the aarti with a ghee lamp and share the prasad.
Mahalakshmi is shown with the right hand raised in abhaya, the gesture of reassurance, and the left lowered in varada, the gesture of giving, the pair of mudras that mark most benevolent Hindu deities. She emerged from the churning of the ocean in the Puranic account and became the consort of Vishnu, and she is worshipped as the deity of shri, meaning prosperity, beauty and good fortune together. In household practice she is honoured on Fridays and at Diwali, when the year's accounts are traditionally placed before her.
