1. 1. Wash the bell with warm water and a paste of tamarind or lemon and salt before first use, rinse, and dry it completely inside and out
2. 2. Install on a Monday morning, or on Mahashivratri or a Pradosh evening, after bathing
3. 3. Set it on a white cloth, apply bhasma or chandan to the Nandi figure, and light a ghee diya and incense beside it
4. 4. Offer bilva leaves, white flowers and a little water, as you would to the Shivling itself
5. 5. Chant Om Namah Shivaya one hundred and eight times, ringing the bell at the beginning and again at the end
6. 6. Ring it as you enter the shrine and throughout the aarti; dry it after every abhishekam, since milk and water left on brass will stain, and accept that the metal darkens between polishes

Nandi is Shiva's mount and his gatekeeper, and in every Shiva temple the bull sits outside the sanctum facing the lingam, in the same posture this bell finial takes. Devotees traditionally whisper their request into Nandi's ear before entering, treating him as the one who carries word inside. Placing him on the handle of a bell joins two acts that both announce arrival: the sound that opens the worship, and the bull who has been waiting at the door all along.
