1. 1. Wash both lamps in warm water with tamarind or lemon and salt before first use, rinse and dry them fully
2. 2. Fill each well about three-quarters with gingelly (sesame) oil, or with ghee on festival days
3. 3. Set one twisted cotton wick in each lamp, resting the tip on the lip so it draws oil without drowning
4. 4. Light both together on an Ekadashi, a Vaikuntha Ekadashi or a Satyanarayan Katha morning, facing east
5. 5. Chant Om Namo Narayanaya while lighting, and offer tulsi leaves in front of the pair
6. 6. Let the flames die down naturally, then clean the soot from the lips with tamarind or lemon and salt once the metal is cold; the conch's spiral traps carbon and needs a soft brush rather than a cloth

The shankha and the sudarshana chakra are two of the four objects Vishnu holds, and in South Indian temples they appear together on either side of the sanctum as a pair of standing emblems. The conch is blown at the start of worship because its sound is treated as the audible form of Om, the first vibration of creation; the discus is the weapon that cuts through delusion and disorder. Casting the pair as oil lamps, a set sometimes called Kuber Deepam, brings both emblems into the household shrine in a form that can be lit rather than only displayed.
