• The north-east corner, Ishanya, is Shiva's quarter and the traditional position for a lingam in the home.
• If the piece has a spouted base, set the spout pointing north so the abhishek water drains that way.
• Place it on a metal or stone tray rather than directly on wood or cloth, because it will be bathed regularly.
• Keep it out of the bedroom and away from the bathroom wall and the kitchen. Traditional practice keeps only one lingam in a household shrine.
• Water and milk leave a chalky bloom on brass if left to dry. Wipe it after each abhishek; the gradual darkening of the metal itself is expected and usually left alone.

1. 1. Wash the lingam in clean water and then panchamrit before first placement, rinse it and set it on its tray.
2. 2. Perform jalabhishek daily by pouring clean water slowly over the lingam. Milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar make the full panchamrit abhishek for festival days.
3. 3. Offer bilva patra, the three-lobed bel leaf, laid smooth side down. Bilva is the offering particular to Shiva; tulsi is not offered to him.
4. 4. Add white flowers, bhasma or vibhuti, and a few grains of unbroken rice.
5. 5. Chant Om Namah Shivaya, traditionally 108 times.
6. 6. Monday is Shiva's day, with the Mondays of Shravan and the night of Mahashivratri as the principal occasions. Conclude with a ghee lamp aarti.

The lingam is the aniconic mark of Shiva, worshipped as a sign of presence rather than as a likeness, and it is the only major Hindu image bathed continuously rather than dressed and garlanded. Twelve sites across India are held to hold self-manifested lingams, the Jyotirlingas, and a household lingam is understood as a domestic counterpart to those. The offerings are deliberately plain — water, bilva leaves, bhasma and white flowers, with no ornament — which is consistent with the ascetic character attributed to Shiva.
