1. 1. Wash it in clean water before first use, rinse well and dry it fully so no moisture is trapped in the engraved lines
2. 2. Install on a Thursday or Friday morning, or on Dhanteras, after your bath
3. 3. Set it in place on a yellow or red cloth with the head pointing into the room, and apply a small kumkum tilak to the shell
4. 4. Light a ghee or sesame oil diya beside it and offer incense, akshat rice and a yellow flower
5. 5. Chant Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhanadhanyadi Pataye one hundred and eight times, then Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseed Praseed for the Shree Yantra circuit
6. 6. Wipe it weekly with a dry cloth; if you keep water on it, dry the metal fully once a week to stop verdigris forming in the engraving

The tortoise is a Vastu remedy for what it does rather than what it looks like: it carries its shelter with it, moves slowly and deliberately, and withdraws rather than confronts. In the Puranas the same creature is Kurma, the second avatar of Vishnu, who took tortoise form to bear Mount Mandara on his back while the gods and asuras churned the ocean of milk. That image of a steady base holding up a churning world is why the tortoise is placed in the north of a house or shop, the direction associated with Kubera.
