Brass Vastu Feng Shui Tortoise with Fancy Plate - 105mm

• Head facing into the house, never towards the main door — the tortoise should look as though it is walking in

• Keep clean water in the plate if you follow that tradition, changing it every two or three days
• Not in the bedroom, not in the kitchen or beside the sink, and not tucked behind a door or under a staircase

1. 1. Wash both the tortoise and the plate in clean water before first use, rinse and dry them completely
2. 2. Install on a Thursday or Friday morning, or on Dhanteras or Akshaya Tritiya, after your bath
3. 3. Set the plate down first, then the tortoise on it with the head pointing into the room, and apply a small kumkum tilak to the shell
4. 4. Light a ghee or sesame oil diya beside it and offer incense, akshat rice and a yellow flower
5. 5. Chant Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhanadhanyadi Pataye one hundred and eight times, facing north
6. 6. Change the water every two or three days and dry the metal fully once a week; standing water on brass leaves a green-blue verdigris that then needs a tamarind or lemon-and-salt scrub

Both Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui place the tortoise in the north of a building, and for much the same reason: it is the animal that carries its own shelter, moves without haste, and outlives almost everything around it. In Hindu myth the same creature is Kurma, the form Vishnu took in order to sit on the seabed and bear Mount Mandara while the ocean of milk was churned. Keeping water in the dish beneath it follows the Feng Shui side of the tradition, where the tortoise is a water creature and the two are kept together.
