1. Begin on a Monday morning, after a bath.
2. Wash the pair in clean water and then in raw milk, and dry it on a clean cloth.
3. Hold it between both palms and set your intention for the marriage or partnership you want to keep whole.
4. Chant Om Gauri Shankaraya Namah eleven times, then put it on.
5. Wear it on a red or white thread long enough for the pair to hang straight, or rest it on a Shiva lingam in the household shrine.
6. Re-energise on Mondays and at Mahashivratri, and never try to separate or straighten the join.

A Gauri Shankar hangs as one long piece and needs a longer thread than a single bead so the pair sits vertically instead of twisting. Many couples keep it in the shrine rather than wearing it, bringing it out on Mondays and anniversaries.

Monday belongs to Shiva, and this pair is his and Parvati's, so Monday is both the traditional first wearing and the day the listing specifies for energising. Mahashivratri and the couple's own wedding anniversary are the other customary occasions. A start during Shravan is considered particularly auspicious.

A Gauri Shankar forms when two Rudraksha seeds develop fused inside the same fruit, and the grain runs continuously across the join, which is how a lab tells it apart from two beads bound together. Nepali fused pairs are the ones the texts refer to, and they are considerably scarcer than the single beads that come off the same trees. Each half carries its own mukhi count, so no two pairs are alike in either shape or face count.
