• Place it facing north or east; the devotee should sit facing east or north during puja.
• The north-east of the room is the traditional quarter, though Ganesha is also kept near the main entrance facing inwards to greet whoever enters.
• Keep it at desk height or above on a clean surface, never directly on the floor.
• Avoid the bathroom wall, the space under the stairs and any place where footwear is kept.
• The patina is the character of this piece. Do not scour it with tamarind or acid polish, which will strip the finish; dust it with a dry cloth only.

1. 1. Wipe the murti clean with a dry cloth before first placement. Do not immerse a patina piece in water or panchamrit, as that will lift the finish.
2. 2. Set it on a clean red or yellow cloth and light a ghee lamp to its right.
3. 3. Offer durva grass in blades of three or five, red hibiscus, and sindoor applied to the forehead if you follow that practice.
4. 4. Chant Om Gam Ganapataye Namah, traditionally 108 times.
5. 5. Wednesday is the day traditionally kept for Ganesha, and Ganesh Chaturthi is the principal festival.
6. 6. Offer modak or laddoo as bhog, complete the aarti, and wipe away any offering residue so it does not mark the copper.

Ganesha is invoked at the start of any undertaking, which is why his image is set at thresholds, on desks and at the head of a puja. The Agama texts treat copper as a ritually pure metal, and it has long been the standard material for puja vessels across South India. A patina finish is created by allowing copper to oxidise under controlled conditions rather than polishing it bright, which gives the surface the darkened, mottled look of a well-kept temple piece.
