Questions about this product

Frequently Asked Questions

Tulsi, or holy basil, is regarded as especially dear to Lord Vishnu and Krishna, and the plant is treated as sacred in Vaishnava households. Wearing beads made from tulsi wood is understood as a mark of devotion and shelter, which is why Vaishnava devotees and ISKCON practitioners keep it on constantly rather than only while chanting.
There are 108 counting beads plus one guru bead, sometimes called the Meru or summit bead. The guru bead marks the completion of a round; you stop there, reverse direction and begin the next round rather than passing over it.
It is most associated with the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, the Vishnu Sahasranama and Rama Nama. Devotees commonly commit to a fixed number of rounds each day and reserve the mala for that purpose alone.
Keep them dry and remove the mala before bathing, since repeated soaking swells and cracks the wood and weakens the thread. If the beads look dry, a very small amount of pure sandalwood or coconut oil worked in with the fingers restores the tone. Never use soap or chemical cleaners.
In practice it is worn around the neck by devotees of all ages and treated with the same respect as any sacred item: kept off the floor, removed before using the washroom, and not shared casually. Many people keep one mala for chanting and a separate one for wearing.
