- Kalagni Rudra's bead — The five faces are given to Shiva in his Kalagni Rudra aspect, and this is the one mukhi the texts allow anyone to wear without first consulting a chart.
- Guru's graha — Jupiter rules the five-faced bead, which is why it is associated with study, teaching and steady judgement rather than with speed.
- The beginner's Rudraksha — Traditionally the first bead given to a new wearer, and the count used to string the 108-bead japa mala.
- Pancha Mahapataka — Classical texts describe it in terms of purifying the five great transgressions, which is the origin of its reputation for everyday cleansing.
- Nepal-grown — A Himalayan bead, visibly larger than the Java five-faced beads sold at a similar price.
- Begin on a Thursday morning, after a bath.
- Rinse the pendant in clean water and, if you keep milk for puja, dip it briefly and dry it.
- Hold it and set your intention for the daily practice you want to sustain, whether japa, study or simply sitting quietly.
- Chant Om Hreem Namah eleven times, then put it on.
- Wear it on plain cotton thread or a chain; being the mildest mukhi it may be worn continuously, including at night.
- Rinse it in plain water once a week and let it dry fully before wearing again.
The 5 Mukhi is the one bead meant to stay on, so a soft cotton or silk thread is more practical than a chain that has to keep coming off. It also sits comfortably as the centre bead of a 5 Mukhi mala if you already wear one.
Thursday belongs to Brihaspati, and Jupiter is the graha given to the five-faced bead, so a Thursday start is the most common. Monday is equally accepted, being Shiva's day and this bead being Kalagni Rudra's. Mahashivratri is the one night in the year on which most wearers will begin a 5 Mukhi regardless of the weekday.
The great majority of Rudraksha beads that grow are five-faced, which is why the 5 Mukhi is both the least expensive and the one the texts recommend most widely. The Shiva Purana names it for Kalagni Rudra and places no restriction on who may wear it, unlike the higher mukhis, which carry qualifying conditions. Nepali beads such as this one come from trees at Himalayan altitude and are noticeably larger and more deeply grooved than the Indonesian stock that dominates the market.
