1. Begin on a Friday morning, after a bath.
2. Rinse the pendant in clean water, then hold it over incense smoke until the cap is warm to the touch.
3. Hold it and set your intention for the contest, examination or negotiation you are preparing for.
4. Chant Om Hreem Hum Namah eleven times, then put it on.
5. Wear it on a white or red thread against the skin, or on a chain that lets the bead sit high on the chest.
6. Take it off before contact sport, and before sleeping if the cap catches on bedding.

This is a larger Nepali bead, so it carries well on a thicker cord and does not need a heavy chain to look intentional. Worn over a t-shirt it is substantial enough to be the only thing at the neck.

Friday is Shukra's day and Venus rules the six-faced bead, so that is the usual start. Households that lead with the deity rather than the graha begin instead on a Tuesday, Kartikeya's day in the South. Either way the first wearing is done before the day's first meal.

Six is the number of Kartikeya's heads, and the Puranic tradition gives this mukhi to him as the son born to lead Shiva's armies. Nepali beads of this count come from Elaeocarpus ganitrus growing at altitude in the eastern Himalaya, and the difference from Indonesian stock is visible: deeper valleys between the mukhis, a heavier bead, a more irregular outline. The six lines are natural growth clefts, so no two beads of this mukhi are shaped alike.
