• Vishwakarma is placed at the workplace rather than the home mandir: the workshop, the factory, the site office or the fabrication shed.
• Face the murti east or north, and keep him on the north or east side of the room where possible.
• Set him on a raised wooden shelf or a bracket above bench height, clear of oil, swarf and coolant splash.
• Do not place him beside a dustbin, a washbasin, a scrap bin or footwear, and not directly under a staircase.
• A workshop atmosphere darkens brass quickly with oil vapour and dust. Wipe him down before Vishwakarma Puja each year rather than trying to keep him bright daily.

1. 1. Clean the murti with water before first placement, dry it fully and set it on a clean yellow or red cloth on the bench shelf.
2. 2. On the day of installation, clean the tools and machines as well; in this tradition the tools are worshipped alongside the deity.
3. 3. Offer haldi and kumkum, unbroken rice and a garland of marigold, and place a coconut and betel leaves before the murti.
4. 4. Chant Om Vishwakarmaya Namah, traditionally 108 times.
5. 5. Vishwakarma Puja falls in mid-September on Kanya Sankranti and is the principal day; some regions observe it in the Bengali month of Bhadra.
6. 6. Offer sweets and fruit as bhog, perform the aarti and distribute prasad to everyone who works in the space.

Vishwakarma is named in the Rig Veda as the maker, the deity who fashions and fits together, and later texts credit him with building Lanka, Dwarka, the Puri chariots and the weapons of the gods. He is the patron of every trade that shapes material, which is why his image is kept at the workbench rather than in the household shrine. Vishwakarma Puja, observed around the middle of September, is one of the few Hindu observances directed at tools and machines as much as at the deity himself.
