• Hanuman faces south, unlike most deities. Set the murti so that its principal face looks to the south.
• The south or south-west wall of the puja room is his quarter; some households keep him near the main entrance instead, facing outward as a guardian.
• At 202 grams he needs a firm chowki rather than a light shelf, at seated chest height or above, on a red or orange cloth.
• Do not keep him in a bedroom, against a bathroom wall, under a staircase, or where footwear and leather are stored.
• Sindoor and til oil are traditional offerings to Hanuman and mark brass permanently. Decide before the first puja whether you want the murti to carry that colour.

1. 1. Wash the murti in clean water before installation, dry it fully and set it on a red or orange cloth on the chowki.
2. 2. Light a til-oil lamp to its right; til oil is the customary Saturday lamp oil for Hanuman.
3. 3. Apply sindoor mixed with chameli oil to the murti, and offer a garland of red flowers along with betel leaves.
4. 4. Chant Om Hanumate Namah, traditionally 108 times, then recite the Hanuman Chalisa or the Sunderkand.
5. 5. Tuesday and Saturday are Hanuman's days; Hanuman Jayanti, on the Chaitra full moon, is the principal festival.
6. 6. Offer boondi laddoo, banana or a jaggery-and-gram preparation as bhog, perform the aarti and distribute the prasad.

In the Ahiravana episode of the regional Ramayanas, Ravana's ally carries Rama and Lakshmana to the netherworld and guards them with five lamps burning in five directions, all of which have to be put out at the same moment. Hanuman assumes five faces at once to do it, taking on Narasimha to the south, Garuda to the west, Varaha to the north and Hayagriva facing upward, with his own face to the east. The form is unusual in combining four Vishnu avataras into a single body, and it is read as watchfulness in every direction at the same time.
