- The plain seated Ganapati — The everyday form of the deity, without consorts or canopy, which is what most households keep for daily puja.
- 2.8 inches — Small enough for a car dashboard, an office desk altar or a shelf in a rented flat, and the usual choice for a first idol.
- Trunk curved to the left — Vama-mukha, the form kept for domestic worship, as against the right-turned Siddhi Vinayaka which calls for stricter ritual discipline.
- Kept at thresholds — Traditionally placed near an entrance, where Ganesha is honoured as the guardian of doorways and of beginnings.
- An approachable gift — Commonly given at Ganesh Chaturthi, at a house move, or with a new vehicle.
- Face it north or east. Near a doorway it should face into the house, so it greets whoever enters.
- The north-east of the puja room is the traditional quarter for a home mandir.
- Keep it on a raised surface at or above waist height, never on the floor and never on a windowsill exposed to rain.
- Do not place it in a bedroom, on a bathroom-facing wall, or beneath a staircase.
- If you keep it in a car, secure it so it cannot shift, and wipe off dust and windscreen film; brass in a car dulls faster than brass in a mandir.
- 1. Wash the murti in clean water and then in panchamrit, rinse it and dry it before it is first placed.
- 2. Set it on a clean red or yellow cloth and light a ghee lamp to its right.
- 3. Offer durva grass in bunches of three blades, the offering most particular to Ganesha, along with red flowers and sindoor.
- 4. Chant Om Gam Ganapataye Namah, traditionally 108 times.
- 5. Wednesday is the day kept for Ganesha; Ganesh Chaturthi and the monthly Sankashti Chaturthi are the principal occasions.
- 6. Offer modak or laddoo, perform the aarti and share the prasad.
Ganesha is invoked first in any Hindu rite, before the deity the rite is actually addressed to, which is why his image appears at doorways, at the head of manuscripts and at the start of a journey. The direction of the trunk matters in traditional practice: the left-turned Vama-mukha is the household form, worshipped with ordinary daily ritual, while the right-turned form is regarded as demanding and is more often installed in temples. The broken tusk he holds is said to be the one he snapped off in order to write down the Mahabharata as Vyasa dictated it.
