- The 2 inch travel size — Small enough for a car dashboard, a bag pouch or a hostel desk, which is what most buyers of this size want it for.
- Five faces at miniature scale — Hanuman, Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha and Hayagriva, the composite guardian form reduced to a piece you can carry.
- Kept in vehicles — The five-faced form is a common choice for a new car or for a driver who covers long distances.
- Solid brass, not plated — At this size the metal is the whole object, so it will not chip or flake the way a coated resin figure does.
- Tuesday and Saturday worship — Even a travelling murti is traditionally offered a lamp and a Chalisa recitation on Hanuman's days.
- Hanuman is traditionally set facing south. In a car, place him on the dashboard facing the driver rather than out towards the road.
- At home, a south or south-west shelf of the puja room, or a small desk altar in an office.
- Keep him at or above waist height on a clean surface; a 2 inch murti is easily left on a low table by mistake.
- Do not keep him in a bedroom, against a bathroom wall, or in the same drawer or pocket as footwear, leather or loose change.
- Fix him firmly if he travels. A loose brass idol on a dashboard becomes a projectile in a sudden stop, and repeated knocks will scuff the finish.
- 1. Rinse the murti in clean water before first use, dry it and place it on a small square of red cloth.
- 2. Light a ghee lamp before him at home on the first day, even if he will afterwards travel with you.
- 3. Offer a little sindoor, a red flower and a few grains of unbroken rice.
- 4. Chant Om Hanumate Namah, traditionally 108 times, or recite the Hanuman Chalisa once.
- 5. Tuesday and Saturday are Hanuman's days; for a travelling murti, a lamp lit at home on those days is the usual practice.
- 6. Offer boondi or a banana as bhog on Hanuman Jayanti, complete the aarti and take the prasad.
Panchmukhi Hanuman comes from the Ahiravana episode of the regional Ramayanas, in which Hanuman assumes five faces at once to put out five lamps burning in five directions and so rescue Rama and Lakshmana from the netherworld. The four added faces are Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha and Hayagriva, all forms of Vishnu, turned to the south, west, north and upward. Because each face watches a different quarter, this is the form traditionally chosen by travellers and by those who want a protective image they can keep with them.
