- Five faces in one murti — Hanuman, Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha and Hayagriva, the composite form Hanuman took in the Ahiravana episode of the Ramayana.
- 3 inches, the home mandir size — Larger than the 2 inch travel murti and sized to sit in a household shrine rather than on a dashboard.
- Detail across all five faces — At this height each face can be modelled with its own features rather than suggested in outline.
- Kept for guardianship in tradition — The five-faced form is the one turned to by those seeking Hanuman's watch over a household.
- Tuesday and Saturday worship — The days traditionally kept for Hanuman, and the reason many homes keep a dedicated murti rather than a framed picture.
- Panchmukhi Hanuman is traditionally placed facing south, which is his own direction, unlike most deities who face east or north.
- A south or south-west wall of the puja room suits him; some households keep him near the main door instead, facing outward as a guardian.
- Set him on a raised chowki at seated chest height or above, on a red or orange cloth.
- Keep him away from the bathroom, the kitchen sink, footwear and the underside of a staircase. He is not kept in a bedroom.
- Sindoor and oil are traditional offerings to Hanuman and will mark the brass permanently. Decide before the first puja whether you want the murti to carry that colour.
- 1. Wash the murti in clean water before first placement, dry it fully and set it on a red or orange cloth.
- 2. Light a ghee or til-oil lamp to its right; til oil is the customary Saturday lamp oil for Hanuman.
- 3. Offer sindoor mixed with chameli oil, applied to the murti, along with a garland of red flowers and betel leaves.
- 4. Chant Om Hanumate Namah, traditionally 108 times, or recite the Hanuman Chalisa.
- 5. Tuesday and Saturday are the days kept for Hanuman; Hanuman Jayanti is the principal festival.
- 6. Offer boondi laddoo, banana or a jaggery-and-gram preparation as bhog, perform the aarti and distribute the prasad.
The five-faced form comes from the Ahiravana episode told in the regional Ramayanas. To extinguish five lamps burning in five directions at the same moment, and so free Rama and Lakshmana, Hanuman took on the faces of Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha and Hayagriva alongside his own. Each face is turned to a different quarter, and the form is therefore read as watchfulness on every side. It is one of the few Hindu images in which four separate Vishnu avataras are combined into a single body.
