• Ganesha under a chhatra — The parasol above the deity is the classical Indian mark of sovereignty, carried over rulers and over temple deities in procession.

• Face the idol north or east. If you keep it near the entrance, turn it to face into the house rather than out of it.
• The north-east of the puja room is the traditional quarter; a west wall of the mandir also works, with the idol looking east.
• Keep the chhatra clear of low shelving so the canopy is not hidden. An open niche suits it better than a crowded almirah.
• Do not place it in a bedroom, against a bathroom wall, or below a staircase.
• The recesses under the canopy collect lamp soot. Brush them out with a soft dry brush; the brass will darken over time, which many households prefer to leave as it is.

1. 1. Wash the murti in clean water, then in panchamrit, rinse it and dry it completely before it is first set in place.
2. 2. Set it on a clean red cloth on a wooden chowki and light a ghee lamp and incense to its right.
3. 3. Offer durva grass in bunches of three blades, red flowers and sindoor.
4. 4. Chant Om Gam Ganapataye Namah, traditionally 108 times, ideally on a Wednesday morning.
5. 5. Ganesh Chaturthi is the traditional day for installing a Ganesha murti or renewing its worship.
6. 6. Offer modak or besan laddoo, perform the aarti and distribute prasad to the household.

The chhatra, or parasol, is one of the oldest emblems of authority in India, held over rulers in coronation reliefs and over temple deities when they are carried in procession. Placing it above Ganesha marks him as the sovereign of beginnings, the deity honoured before any other in a rite. In this iconography Ganesha is conventionally shown with the ankush and the pasha, the goad and the noose, along with his broken tusk and a bowl of modak.
