1. 1. Wipe the plate with a soft dry cloth before installing; if it has travelled, rinse with a little raw milk and then clean water, and dry it fully
2. 2. Install on a Friday morning, or on Dhanteras or the first day of a new account year
3. 3. Set it on a red or yellow cloth on the counter or shelf, engraved face upright and visible
4. 4. Offer a lit diya, incense, a few grains of akshat rice and a yellow or red flower; kumkum may be applied at the centre
5. 5. Chant Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhanadhanyadi Pataye one hundred and eight times while facing the plate
6. 6. Repeat a short lamp and incense offering each Friday, and dust the plate weekly — brass in a shop atmosphere darkens quickly

Vyapar vriddhi translates literally as growth of trade, and this plate belongs to a family of commercial yantras that Indian shopkeepers have kept at the counter for generations. Its geometry combines figures associated with Lakshmi and with Kubera, the yaksha king who in the Puranas holds the treasury of the gods and is invoked at Dhanteras and at the opening of a new account book. In many trading families the yantra is installed on the same day the new bahi-khata is begun, and worshipped alongside it.
