Real, verified reviews from our spiritual community
- Protection — Sulemani akik is the stone most commonly worn in Indian households against buri nazar.
- Grounding — Traditionally chosen for staying settled in crowded or unsettled surroundings.
- Boundaries — Long favoured by people who take on the mood of whatever room they walk into.
- Linked with Shani and Ketu — Saturn for endurance, Ketu for detachment.
- Quiet to look at — The black and white banding reads as plain jewellery, which is why many wear it to work.
- Begin on a Saturday morning, after a bath.
- Rest it on a clean cotton cloth in indirect morning light for two or three hours to cleanse it.
- Hold it and set your intention for keeping your own footing in a situation you find draining.
- Chant Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah eleven times, then put it on.
- Wear on the left wrist, which Indian practice treats as the receiving side.
- Wipe with a dry cloth and keep it away from perfume sprays and household chemicals.
Black banded agate is the easiest crystal bracelet to wear with formal clothing and the only one that genuinely disappears under a cuff. It takes silver, steel and gunmetal cleanly; keep it off the same wrist as a metal watch bracelet so the polished beads are not scratched.
Saturday, the day of Shani, is the traditional day to begin wearing sulemani akik. Saturn is the graha associated with discipline and endurance, which is why the stone is so often taken up during Sade Sati. Start in the morning after a bath.
Sulemani takes its name from Suleiman, Solomon, and this banded black agate has moved along the trade routes between Yemen, Persia and Gujarat for centuries; Khambhat in Gujarat has been cutting agate for something close to four thousand years and still does. The white bands are not applied but are layers of chalcedony laid down inside a rock cavity over a very long time, which is why no two beads carry the same pattern. A good deal of what is sold as sulemani is dyed onyx, which is the reason the certificate matters here.
