Questions about this product

Frequently Asked Questions

The peacock is traditionally regarded as the vahana of Lord Murugan, and in South Indian temple craft it stands for beauty, protection and auspiciousness. Lighting a lamp shaped in this form is seen as a way of inviting that grace into the home. The detailing on the feathers, beak and tail is worked by hand, so each piece carries small variations.
It is a fully functional oil lamp as well as a decorative brass artwork. The well holds sesame or ghee oil with a cotton wick in the usual manner. Many households light it for the evening deepam and leave it on display through the day.
It is lit most often during Navratri, Skanda Sashti and Murugan puja, and it is also popular through the Diwali season. There is no restriction on everyday use, so many families light it for the daily evening lamp as well.
Wipe the lamp with a soft dry cloth after each use once it has cooled, so oil does not settle into the grooves. For heavier tarnish, a mild tamarind or lemon and salt paste followed by a thorough rinse and dry works well on pure brass. Avoid harsh scouring pads, as they can dull the handcrafted detailing.
It is generally placed on the floor or on the platform of the pooja area beside the deity, or on either side if you have more than one. Since it is energised before dispatch, you can place it and begin lighting it without any special preparation. Its size also suits a console or entrance nook during festival days.
