What Hartalika Teej is

Three vrats in the monsoon months are grouped together as Teej, and Hartalika is the last and strictest of them. It is observed on the third day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, the sixth month of the Hindu lunar year. Married women keep it for the wellbeing and long life of their husbands. Unmarried girls keep it in the hope of a good match. In both cases the worship is directed at Shiva and Parvati as a pair, never at one alone, which is what separates this vrat from an ordinary Monday Shiva puja.

The story behind the name

The word breaks into harat, meaning abduction, and aalika, meaning female friend. In the traditional account, Parvati had set her heart on Shiva while her father was preparing to marry her to Vishnu. Her friend carried her off into dense forest so the wedding could not happen. There she made a lingam out of sand, kept a severe fast, and worshipped through the night until Shiva accepted her. Who keeps the Hartalika Teej 2026 vrat

What to keep ready the night before

Set everything out on the evening of 13 September so nothing has to be hunted for at half past five in the morning. Clean river sand or soft clay for the Shiva and Parvati forms, a wooden chowki with a red or yellow cloth, a kalash of water with a coconut, and a lamp. Many households keep a brass Shivling in the mandir alongside the clay one so the puja space still holds a fixed form after the immersion. A steady akhand diya is worth having if the lamp has to stay lit through the night, since an open wick and a September breeze rarely cooperate.

Then the offerings. Bel patra, dhatura, white flowers, durva grass, fruit, sweets, sindoor, bangles, a comb and a small mirror for the shringar tray, and unbroken rice. For japa, Shaiva households usually use rudraksha or clear quartz. A sphatik mala of 108 beads is the common choice for repeating Om Namah Shivaya, and the count on a japamala keeps the mind from drifting during a long fast.
